Today is my mom's birthday! I got all of my reading genes from her, so it only made sense to talk about her favorite books today! From the time I was a little kid my mom always made sure we had books to read. Every time I went to the mall with her I would ask to go to the bookstore, and she NEVER said no. Now that I have gotten older we have gotten to share quite a few books which has been amazing. We also love shopping for books for my nine year old sister, and of course we get to read those too! Listed below are my mom's favorite books or authors, a brief synopsis, and her thoughts!
1. Debbie Macomber
Thoughts: I like to read Debbie Macomber when I need a feel good, easy read, with a happy ending. The main characters in her books are usually women, and focus around women's relationships. These books are basically comfort food for the reader. My favorite books to read by Debbie Macomber are her series; each book focusses on different characters in the town so you get to know the community well. The Cedar Cove Series and The Blossom Street Series are at the top of my list.
2. The Shack by William P. Young
Synopsis: This is a story about a family that loses their little girl to tragedy, and the father's journey in coping.
Thoughts: I had a vey difficult time getting through the beginning. I had to set it down and come back to it many times, as I have daughters and it was terrifying to read about something that could happen. Once I got past the raw emotion of the tragedy I was intrigued about the father's journey in dealing with his anger with God for allowing it to happen. Any Christian dealing with anger toward God should read this book.
3. Jodi Picoult
Thoughts: Jodi's books are full of controversial topics that make you think and question the situations presented. The endings are not always predictable, but they don't disappoint. These would be great book club books, and usually have a list of questions in the back. Picking a favorite book of hers is nearly impossible due to them all being so good, and discussing varying conflicts.
4. Nicolas Sparks
Thoughts: Nicolas Sparks has the gift of knowing a woman's heart in his writing. His books stir deep emotion and often bring me to tears. His books are definitely "niche" reads, you go into them knowing what you will get out. Some of my favorites are The Best of Me, Safe Haven, and The Last Song.
5. Sherryl Woods
Thoughts: Sherryl Woods is the kindred spirit to Debbie Macomber. Her books also focus on women, and their relationships. Her books are also easy to read, with happy endings. I just started reading more of her books because I ran out of Debbie Macomber's to read. Some of my favorites so far are The Calamity Janes Series, and the Chesapeake Shores Series.
