House by Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti
This book forced me to stay up late due to fear and needing to figure out what was going to happen. If you are looking for a scary book to keep you on the edge of your seat while simultaneously hiding under a blanket, this is the one. In House, two couples are stranded in an old house they found after they both had car troubles. Things at the house are weird, and something isn't right. When a tin can is thrown into the house with rules scrawled on it, they realize they are now part of a deadly game. When the only way out of the house is in, and the only way to win is to lose the couples are put to the ultimate test of survival.
Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell
This book took the book world by storm last year, so of course it will be on our list this year. Even if you have already read this, it's a good one to revisit every year! This is the last year Josiah and Deja are working at the pumpkin patch before they head off to college. For the last three years Josiah has had a crush on another girl that works at the pumpkin patch, and Deja vows to help him talk to her. Deja also plans to sample all of the food in the park! This is a really fast story, and the artwork is phenomenal!
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
The Graveyard Book is a Jungle Book retelling with a twist. Bod is an orphan that found his way to a graveyard as an infant while his parents were being gruesomely murdered. The ghosts of the graveyard take him in, and care for him as their child. However, the murderer that killed his parents is still searching for him. I loved this book, and loved watching Bod grow throughout the story. This book is definitely perfect for halloween, and maybe a game of ghosts in the graveyard after you read it!
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
This classic story is a novella, under 150 pages, which means it is a super quick read! It is about a London lawyer named John Gabriel Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. This story has just the right amount of creepy and it is super interesting. It's the perfect quick read to get you in the mood for Halloween.
Carrie by Stephen King
Stephen King is well known as the king of horror. (See what I did there?) Carrie is a great place to start if you are new to his books because it is one of his shorter books, and the story is gripping. This book revolves around our main character, Carrie. She is extremely sheltered by her mother, and bullied at school. When Carrie discovers she has telekineses she is ready to seek revenge. This is the first book I ever read by King, and I loved it. I am now a devoted fan of his, and have this book to thank.
Ghosters by Diana Corbitt
This is a middle grade paranormal mystery filled with dark family secrets. The story follows middle schooler, Theresa whom is forced to move into a creepy old familial home after her mother dies. Theresa quickly finds out the house might be haunted, and with the help of her brother, and her new friend Kerry, they set out to investigate. This book will definitely get you in the mood for all of the spooky things coming on halloween!
