January 2022 Wrap Up

Sarah's Reads

This reading month was obviously not great with reading. I have been working seven days a week, and moved. I just did not have the energy to be reading as much. House of Leaves, the one book I tried to read this month was a total flop, and put me in a bit of a slump. Hopefully February is a better month for me!

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski - DNF

I very rarely DNF a book, and if I do it is because I am not in the right headspace for the book. I then read the book at a different time with much more success. Unfortunately, I only made it a whopping three hundred pages into this book before I finally called it quits. This book was marketed to me as one of the scariest books ever written. Ultimately, it was pretentious at best, and not scary in the least. I genuinely did not care about any of the characters or even the plot. Now I just want my money and time back.

Shannon's Reads

1. Educated by Tara Westover

Rating: 5 stars

Synopsis: Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills bag".

Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education and no one to intervene when one of Tara's older brothers became violent. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself.

2. The Dollmaker by Mary Burton

Rating: 5 stars

Synopsis: Dr. Tessa McGowan had never seen anything quite like it. But the mutilated bodies on her exam table tell a stunningly macabre tale: someone with a twisted mind is kidnapping women and altering their faces to resemble real, life-size dolls. As a forensic pathologist, it’s her job to aid the agent leading the case—even if that agent is her estranged husband.Twelve years ago an unspeakable tragedy destroyed Dakota Sharp’s world. Haunted by the ghosts of his past, he’s devoted himself to capturing killers. His only regret is that it cost him Tessa. Now, as the Dollmaker case brings them together.
