Book Review: Shadow Rider by Kathrynn Dennis

Synopsis: Sybilla Corbuc has an uncommon understanding of the horses she cares for, but there are men who distrust such wisdom in a woman. Forced to become a nobleman's servant to avoid prison, Sybilla finds herself bound by chains that are stronger still—she cannot deny her passionate feelings for her new master, Sir Guy of Warwick. Neither is prepared to submit to the other, but his dark eyes and his unbridled desire are too potent a force to resist.

Brought together by the birth of a mysterious colt—an animal of supernatural power that may foretell their destiny—they embark upon a perilous journey as the kingdom crumbles around them, a journey that will bring them ever closer to each other—and to the danger that lies ahead. And only love can save them.

Shannon's review: 3.5/5 stars

So, I'm going to be honest, this is not a book I would see in a bookstore and pick up...like ever. While I love romance, I gravitate toward contemporary or YA romance. I received this book in a romance book box I ordered during quarantine (I said how many used books I wanted and they randomly selected them). That being said this is the first historical romance I have read, due to this, while reviewing this book I do not have much in the way of comparison. With that being said, let me begin.

First off, I am a horse lover through and through, so when I first read the synopsis I knew I had to give the book a shot, if only for the incorporation of horses. The horses are what drew me and kept me captivated until I got to better know the characters. Sybilla is a strong woman, who is willing to do whatever she needs to be independent. She has a strong connection with horses, and despite "career" being against the law she continues on. Sir Guy of Warwick struggles with his past, so much that it tends to cloud his future. At first I was unsure about him as the heroine, but I did come to like him better, closer to the end of the story. I really enjoyed Sir Guy's friend, Simon, throughout the book.

This book was a fairly quick read. The plot of the story kept moving and didn't linger too long on unimportant elements. Throughout the book there is a lot of sexual tension between Sybilla and Sir Guy and it took a while for this to break. For my personal preference, the building of their relationship was a little longer than I like. However, it was an overall decent book.
