Book Review: Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Synopsis: Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six: The band's album Aurora came to define the rock 'n' roll era of the late seventies, and an entire generation of girls wanted to grow up to be Daisy. But no one knows the reason behind the group's split on the night of their final concert at Chicago Stadium on July 12, 1979 . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock 'n' roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

Shannon's Review:

I put off reading this book way longer than I should have, but finally after recommendations from two people and seeing it all over bookstagram, I decided to give it a shot. The first interesting thing about this book is the way it is written, which I didn't expect, it is written in interview form. This made the book really interesting, because all the characters are talking about their past and so one: you get each person's unique perspective on the past events and two: events and details aren't always remembered the correctly, or the same way. I really loved Daisy and Billy's characters, they were both such unique people, a very much lost souls. Daisy was this crazy, bigger than life, person who sadly was chasing a happiness that eluded her for a long time. Her life seemed perfect on the outside, but really she struggled and this made me feel for her thought out the whole book. This book is the definition of sex, drugs, love, and rock & roll.

Sarah's Review:

I heard a lot of hype about this book, but I probably wouldn't have read it. That is, until my friend Alana told me I had to, and lent me her copy. Wow. I would have made a huge mistake not reading this one. This whole book was formatted as an interview, which I thought was really neat. I love Daisy, she's just perfect. I loved everything about her. I really liked the side characters as well, and they were so crucial to the story. I loved Billy's wife, she handled everything with such grace. Getting to see the inner workings of a rock and roll band in the 60's was a really unique perspective!
